More than 36k sign petition to ‘save’ Doncaster Sheffield airport

More than 36,000 people have so far signed a petition to ‘save’ Doncaster Sheffield airport.

The future of the airport has been thrown in doubt after its owner, the Peel Group, said the site “may no longer be commercially viable”, especially following the announcement that Wizz Air will withdraw.

The only airline maintaining a base at the facility is Tui and a review of options for the site has begun.

Yorkshire Plane Spotting started the petition, citing concerns about “hundreds” of job losses and the impact on the city of Doncaster.

“Doncaster currently serves routes around Europe and the USA and Mexico this would be a tragedy if this gets taken away from us,” said the petition.

The Peel Group acquired the site in 1999 and converted it into an international commercial airport, which opened in 2005.

However, despite growth in passenger numbers, the airport said it has never achieved the “critical mass” required to become profitable.
