Safety concerns highlighted as flights resume in Nepal

Flights have resumed in Nepal following a fatal crash last week.

All 72 people on board the Yeti Airlines service from Kathmandu died as it went down on approach to Pokhara airport on January 15.

It was the fourth aircraft accident to occur in the country since 2018 leading to 172 deaths.

The resumption of air services in the Himalayan nation was confirmed by the Foreign Office.

But it added: “A number of tour operators have decided to stop using certain airlines due to safety concerns.”

A travel advisory also pointed out that all carriers certified in Nepal are on the UK Air Safety List which identifies airlines which do not fulfil “necessary international standards” and are banned from operating to the UK.

“Its purpose is to help UK travellers to make informed decisions on which air carriers to use when flying overseas, including on domestic flights,” the advice added.

“We advise UK nationals travelling overseas to take account of the UK Air Safety List when considering which carriers to fly with.”

Twenty-one Nepalese airlines and helicopter companies are on the list maintained by the UK Civil Aviation Authority.
