Tui working abroad scheme attracts 800 staff in first year

Almost 800 Tui staff from 34 different countries have worked flexibly for a total of 10,000 days in the past year.

Europe’s largest travel company introduced a scheme 12 months ago allowing employees to spend up to 30 working days a year doing their job anywhere in the world.

A working stay abroad lasts an average of 8.5 days and the place of work can be freely chosen.

Employees have so far set up mobile offices in 82 countries as part of Tui ‘Workwide’.

This can be an extension of a family holiday, a visit to family or friends on the other side of the world or time in a place where one has always wanted to work.

Staff from Germany are particularly active users of Tui Workwide, followed by those from the UK and Spain.

Spain tops the list of work destinations, with flexible offices also set up Italy, France and Greece plus long-haul destinations including Peru, Curacao and the Dominican Republic.

Tui Group HR director Sybille Reib said: “We offer our colleagues extensive flexibility in how they organise their work – locally at home and abroad.

“The past two years have shown that virtual co-operation is efficient and also works well across national borders.

“At the same time, we also see that the office workplace continues to play an important role. This is where Tui’s corporate culture can be experienced, creative processes are easier to organise and spontaneous exchanges with colleagues are more successful.

“Flexibility in terms of work location and working hours on the one hand, offices as a place for collaboration and exchange on the other – both concepts belong together for Tui and complement each other.”
