HX Hurtigruten Expeditions to carry out €7m refurbishment of two ships

HX Hurtigruten Expeditions will invest more than €7 million in “significant refurbishments” of two of its ships.

The 250-passenger Fram will undergo refurbishment in April in its dry dock in Panama, with the ship’s first sailing following the works slated for May 26.

The 220-passenger Spitsbergen will receive its upgrades during its dry dock in Astilleros de Santander in Spain in February and March, with the ship returning to service on April 2.

Both ships will receive a new “state-of-the-art” science centre and upgraded polar cabins with new bathrooms.

Fram will also get a full refurbishment of 14 expedition suites and six expedition grand suites, now with twin-bed options, alongside enhancements to the Aune Restaurant and crew cabins.

Spitsbergen’s Explorer Bar will get a refreshed design, a new Brygge Bistro concept, refurbished accessible bathrooms and interpreter setups for passengers to listen to talks in multiple language.

The plans follow the expedition line’s split from Norwegian specialist Hurtigruten which was finalised earlier this month.

Chief executive Gebhard Rainer said: “These significant investments in Fram and Spitsbergen reflect our commitment to delivering world-class expedition experiences.

“From enhanced public spaces to a stronger focus on science and education, these upgrades will elevate every aspect of the journey.

“When guests step aboard in spring 2025, they’ll experience a more immersive, comfortable, and seamless adventure — built on our dedication to continuous improvement.”
