Battlefield tours specialist Leger Holidays has reported “unprecedented” demand for its ‘D-Day Landings in Normandy’ trips, as the 80th anniversary of the invasion approaches.
The invasion of Normandy by Allied troops in the Second World War began on June 6, 1944 – known as D-Day. It was a turning point in the war, leading to the eventual liberation of France and Europe.
Leger said almost all 2024 tours to the region, running until November, are fully booked. They are sold out until July and tours departing between July and October have limited places remaining.
This year, the programme features a special, sold-out, tour over the D-Day anniversary date, when Leger Holidays will take more than 1,000 customers in more than 20 coaches to attend British ceremonies taking place in Normandy.
Liam Race, Leger Shearings Group chief executive, said: “2024 marks the 80th anniversary of the D-Day Landings and the commemorations planned will honour the forces from around the world who took part in the military operation that led to the liberation of Europe.
“We have seen unprecedented demand for our D-Day Normandy tours this year, no doubt prompted by the anniversary.
“It’s interesting that those booking the tours cover all age groups; it’s not just the children of veterans.
“Interest in military history is growing and we believe our tours are respectful, very poignant at times but extremely interesting and bring this important part of history to life.”
Leger’s ‘D-Day Landings in Normandy’ escorted tours visit sites such as Pegasus Bridge and the Pegasus Memorial Museum, and the beaches associated with the landings: Sword, Juno, Omaha, Utah and Gold. They cost from £479 for a four-day tour.
Next year, the Normandy tours run from February 28, 2025, to November 8, 2025, and cost from £459 for a four-day tour.
