Virtual reality Covid-19 lab training ‘could cut PCR test costs’

A technology training specialist has partnered with a Covid test firm to create what they claim is the world’s first virtual reality Covid-19 lab training course.

The partners say that training more lab technicians can help reduce the costs of Covid-19 PCR tests “over the longer term”.

The high cost of many PCR tests has been a major hurdle for consumers planning overseas holidays and the government has vowed to tackle rogue providers.

Technology training firm Credersi is now working with Covid testing company Dam Health on a virtual reality training syllabus to help increase the number of lab technicians in the UK.

Darren Coomer (pictured left), co-founder at Credersi, said: “The high cost of PCR testing is often driven by a lack of skilled resources, so we hope our collaboration with Dam Health will help support the UK economy and travel industry by reducing the unit cost of testing over time.”

Andy Lord (right), fellow co-founder and chief executive of Credersi, added: “Demand for lab technicians is outstripping supply in the market.

“The prime minister could also take the current VAT charged on Covid-19 testing and reinvest this into bursaries to train the next generation of lab tech students.”

The first course will be delivered in October as an eight-week immersive programme.

Dam Health has more than 65 Covid testing clinics with plans for further expansion soon.
