Sandals to install CO detectors in hotel rooms following deaths

Sandals will install carbon monoxide detectors in all hotel rooms across its portfolio following the deaths of three guests at a resort in the Bahamas.

Three American tourists were found dead at Sandals Emerald Bay resort on Exuma earlier this month. A fourth guest was airlifted to hospital and is said to have recovered.

The causes of death have yet to be officially confirmed, though local media have reported that the guests died from carbon monoxide poisoning. Consequently, Sandals has installed detectors in all hotel rooms at Emerald Bay, and has plans to fit them at all its resorts.

A spokesperson said: “CO detectors have now been placed in all guest rooms at Sandals Emerald Bay and, although not mandated in any Caribbean destination where we operate, detectors will be installed in all guest rooms throughout the portfolio.

“Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our guests and team members is and will always be paramount. It is for this reason that we have taken additional measures such as engaging environmental safety experts for a comprehensive review of all systems across the resort.”

The spokesperson added: “We remain devastated by the unimaginable event that occurred at Sandals Emerald Bay Resort earlier this month that resulted in the loss of three lives, including two members of our beloved travel advisory community, and the recovery of a fourth guest.”
