Viking adds ‘first-of-their-kind’ China cruises for 2024

Viking has claimed the introduction of three “first-of-their-kind” China itineraries for international passengers in 2024.

The voyages, which range from 10 to 20 days in length, include a domestic sailing of China’s coast with calls at ports only Viking has access to, according to the line.

The sailings will operate between September and November on the Viking Yi Dun, which was formerly the Viking Sun.

The Chinese-flagged Viking Yi Dun will be the line’s first ship dedicated specifically to the foreign market to operate domestic sailings in China.

Passengers on the 10-day China Discovery itinerary will sail from Shanghai to Hong Kong, calling at Zhoushan, Dongtou, Pingtan, Xiamen and Shenzhen. Prices start at £4,590.

The 15-day Classic China & the Coast sailing from Beijing to Hong Kong calls at the same ports as in the shorter departure as well as Xian, and comes with the opportunity to see the Great Wall, the Forbidden City and the Terra Cotta Warriors. The lead-in price is £6,990.

The 20-day Wonders of China roundtrip sailing from Beijing calls at all the ports in the previous two itineraries, plus Chengdu and Lhasa. Prices start at £9,790.

Chairman Torstein Hagen said: “We are proud that Viking will be the first to operate domestic sailings in China for international travellers.

“Our guests are curious travellers who are interested in experiences that broaden their minds and China, with one of the richest cultures in the world, has been inspiring travellers for centuries.

“For more than 15 years, our Yangtze River voyages were among our highest-rated itineraries. We brought guests to Beijing, to the Great Wall, to the Terra Cotta Warriors and to many other iconic places in this captivating nation. We introduced the real China to our guests and visiting local schoolchildren was always a particular highlight.

“Now, we are delighted to offer such encounters once again with new voyages to a destination that never ceases to capture the imagination.”
