G Adventures cancels five Morocco tours

G Adventures has cancelled five tours that were due to visit areas most impacted by the 6.8 magnitude Morocco earthquake.

The cancellations run until Saturday (September 16) but other trips are due to go ahead as planned.

The operator said: “Communications are still down in some areas, but we have received word from our tour guides on the ground that all our travellers and staff are accounted for and safe.

“All other departures in Morocco are scheduled to run as planned, with minor modifications to trip itineraries in order to avoid any affected areas.”

Marrakech-based regional operations manager Soumia Ait Bendawad said tours would not run to the areas most impacted, which are those visiting Mount Toubkal, the highest peak in Morocco and part of the Atlas Mountains range.

She said: “We are rerouting tours heading to Imlil and Ait Ben Haddou to avoid these destinations. We are also offering alternative experiences in Marrakech to avoid the Medina, which has sadly been impacted by the earthquake.

“The immediate need is to keep these areas clear and let the emergency services fulfil their role, and we will assess as and when it is appropriate to resume trips.”

Ait Bendawad added: “Bringing tourism income back to the affected areas will be vital to support the local communities, but only when it is the appropriate time, and we do not yet know when that will be.

“The other cities we visit are safe. For any travellers who wish to change their travel plans we are helping them do so.

“This approach allows us to continue running our operations but still supports tourism in Morocco, which is essential in such times.

“We are advising all guests to establish contact with their embassies to register their presence and will release more information as it becomes available.”

Meanwhile, in an update on the Morocco earthquake, Tui said: “We are pleased to confirm that we’ve seen minimal damage to hotels and that our customers in Morocco are continuing with their holidays.

“As always, we ask our customers in Morocco to please follow instructions by your hoteliers and local authorities.”

The next planned Tui Airways flights to Morocco are on Friday (September 15) following services which departed on Monday.
