Majorca will host a conference later this month as part of the island’s new strategy to target the expanding accessible tourism market.
Through its tourist board – the Majorca Tourism Foundation – the government hopes the island will become a leading destination in the accessibility market by improving the experience for visitors with any type of disability.
The foundation said tourists in the accessible market have about 28% more spending power than the average visitor – and 96% of visitors normally travel in a group.
Furthermore, this is an “excellent” market for extending the seasons of a destination as there is high demand for year-round travel, added the foundation.
“This is a growing market segment in Europe as one in every five citizens is over 60 years old, with a growing need for support,” said the foundation in a statement.
“Germany, France, the UK, Italy and Spain are the countries with the largest population with accessibility needs…coinciding precisely with the main tourist source markets of Majorca.”
Taking place on October 28, the Accessible Tourism Forum will feature tourism and accessibility experts discussing accommodation, transport and distribution channels such as travel agencies and experiences.
The island has also developed a tourist website with information about accessibility; an extensive programme of marketing activities such as fam trips and press trips; and promotional campaigns in collaboration with PREDIF – the State Representative Platform for People with Physical Disabilities.
