A travel agency in Cambridge has made itself a collection point for charity donations in aid of Red Cross efforts to support the growing humanitarian crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Red Cross has launched a Ukraine Crisis Appeal and expects “further escalation” in the conflict, which has already led to hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians fleeing the country to neighbouring states.
Ponders Travel is collecting nappies, new underwear and socks, sanitary products and thermal clothing in support of Red Cross efforts at the Polish/Ukrainian border. It also has a collection box in store, which opens from 9:30am-5:30pm on weekdays.
As of lunchtime on March 1, within 24 hours of launching the appeal, Ponders had raised £500 in donations and filled its sofa with supplies (see picture).
In a post on its Facebook page, the agency said: “In light of the awful situation in Ukraine at the moment, we, along with many of you who feel te same, want to do all we can to aid the Red Cross and all the amazing volunteers helpig those most affected by the conflict.”
A JustGiving page raising money for the Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal has also been set up by Ponders Travel.
“Any support of course will be very much appreciated by those who need it the most,” the agency said.
