Sandals Resorts marks 80th birthday of late founder with new ocean lookouts

Sandals Resorts International is marking the birthday of late founder Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart by creating ocean lookouts at each resort in his memory.

The well-known Jamaican entrepreneur, who died in January this year, would have been 80 today (July 6).

To commemorate his work, each resort will introduce an ‘Ocean Lookout’, a spot identified at each property that was special to Stewart for its ocean views.

Each lookout will have a plaque with an inscription to say ‘My idea of luxury is being by the sea’ with Stewart’s name and the words: ‘As it was for our founder, may the Caribbean be an endless source of inspiration, peace, and pure joy.’

In addition, each resort is being presented with a specially framed photograph of the late founder, to be displayed in a prominent position for guests and staff, and an online page, Remembering Gordon ‘Butch’ Stewart, has been created with stories about Stewart and his work.

His son, executive chairman Adam Stewart, said: “My father’s image, displayed with honour in our resorts, is important. It shows the world that behind our brands, we are a sixth-generation Jamaican family with roots firmly planted in the Caribbean.

“It’s why establishing a place with spectacular views of the ocean was so significant. Everything we do begins where the sea meets the sand.

“Outside of being a tourism leader, my dad grew up on a beach and enjoyed the simple things in life. He loved being surrounded by the sea, chatting with friends and playing dominoes.

“Family and the Caribbean is who we are, and he gave that to us. In fact, one of his favourite sentiments was ‘wanting our guests to feel like family when they are with us.’ Today, we take this moment to celebrate him and honour how deeply missed he is.”
