A number of airlines have stepped in to provide special rescue fares for passengers left stranded by the collapse of Primera Air.
Norwegian is offering half price repatriation fares are available for passengers travelling long haul between Gatwick and New York. Travel must be completed by October 14.
British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and partner Delta Air Lines are providing support to Primera passengers on selected transatlantic routes with easyJet and Ryanair are covering various European routes.
Primera operated transatlantic routes from Stansted to New York and Washington together with routes to a number of destinations in Spain from Stansted and Birmingham.
As the Civil Aviation Authority listed support from alternative airlines, Rory Boland, Which? Travel editor, hit out at Primera Air.
He said: “Passengers will quite rightly be outraged that the airline was still selling tickets right up to the moment it went bankrupt, knowing full well those tickets would never be honoured.
“If you do have a Primera ticket check if it is part of a package. If not, you may be able to claim your money back through your card provider.
“People should also check their travel insurance policies, although they will not necessarily offer cover for scheduled airline failures such as this.”
Norwegian said: “In light of the recent announcement that Primera has ceased operations with immediate effect and filed for bankruptcy Norwegian has issued repatriation fares for affected passengers.
“Passengers can book these reduced fares, representing a discount of 50% compared to the standard net economy fare excluding taxes, for travel up to 14th October 2018 subject to availability.”
Ryanair is offering £24.99 fares on routes from Stansted to Malaga, Gran Canaria and Tenerife plus Birmingham and Manchester to Malaga until midnight tomorrow (Thursday).
British Airways is providing Primera Air customers discounted fares to travel home before October 16, subject to availability.
However, the fares are not available via travel agents or ba.com and can only be booked via a BA call centre.
Virgin Atlantic’s “distressed traveller fares” can be booked until October 16 with travel available until the end of the month.
Impacted customers will need to show proof of their previous Primera Air booking to access these fares, the airline said.
