Rothwell slams Advantage as Global deal sealed

AIRTOURS has taken a side swipe at members of former franchise partner Advantage after signing a multi-million-pound commercial deal with the Global Travel Group.

UKLG chief executive Peter Rothwell said Global founder George Begg had instilled a disciplined approach to selling among the group’s independent agents.

“That is where other consortia fall down,” he added. “Global’s progress far outstrips that of Advantage.”

Airtours’ franchise with Advantage collapsed in March.

Advantage president Roger Smith said he agreed with Rothwell if he meant members sell the product clients want.

“Global drives through its systems the products it wants agents to sell,” he added.

Rothwell said Global was the third biggest seller of Airtours, behind Thomas Cook.

Begg claimed the agreement will enable the group he founded to achieve its objective of becoming the number one retailer in the UK with 1,000 shops nationwide.
