Thomson is making up to 34 merchandisers redundant in a restructure of its service to Preferred Agents. Sales director Manuel Mascarenhas said the part-time staff will be replaced by up to five regional trainers. “Our merchandisers were very valuable to us but they only made monthly calls to check brochure supplies and that job is mostly automated now,” he said.

Stansted Airport has outlined plans to invest £400m to improve public access to the rapidly growing airport. Rail and road infrastructure will be enhanced over the next five years. BAA, which runs Stansted, wants to increase the number of passengers using public transport to 35% from a current 33% by 2005. The airport company also wants to cut the number of staff driving to work.

Royal Olympic has launched its new cruise ship Olympic Voyager. The840-passenger vessel has a cruising speed of 27 knots, allowing it to carry out an itinerary including


three different continents – Europe, Africa and Asia – in one week. Facilities include cabins with bay windows, a cigar lounge, a pizzeria and a Martini bar. Olympic Voyager was christened in Athens last week by Greek president Konstantinos Stefanopoulos.

Malaysia Airlines has introduced a national reservations number that replaces individual ones for London, Manchester and Glasgow. The number is 0870 607 9090. Reservations for first and business-class tickets can still be made on 020-7341 2050.
