DFDSto include Oresund link in suggested tours

Operator looks to cash in on new bridge

DFDS Seaways is planning a selection ofsuggested routes for motorists to make use of the new Oresund link between Denmark and Sweden.

The 10-and-a-half mile combined road and rail bridge and tunnel between Copenhagen and Malmo opened last Saturday and means the two cities are now 15mins apart instead of 45mins by ferry.

DFDS sales and marketing manager Matthew Eastlake said: “It creates some excellent additional touring opportunities for passengers travelling from Harwich to Esbjerg to drive through Denmark and into southwest Sweden.

“We will feature the bridge in next year’s programme, when we are looking to add suggested tours taking in Denmark and Sweden.”

Eastlake said the bridge also effectively reopens the DFDS route from Harwich to Gothenburg that was dropped last year in favour of a service from Newcastle to Kristiansand in Norway and on to Gothenburg.

“I am sure we will get a lot more customers as awareness of the bridge increases,” he added.

To promote the new link, DFDS teamed up with the Swedish Travel and Tourism Council for a mailshot to clients last month and was also a sponsor at the UK launch in London on June 26.

n DFDSSeaways has teamed up with Stagecoach to provide an integrated coach/ferry service direct from Glasgow and Edinburgh to Newcastle port to link with departures to Amsterdam.

Fares for the combined journey start from £76 return from Glasgow and £74 from Edinburgh. DFDS regional sales manager, Scotland and Cumbria Eva Milroy said: “This new venture is an important step in helping us to increase passenger numbers through Newcastle.
