Winter promotions set to ‘Paint the Town Red’

Visitors to benefit from discount deals

NEW York is rolling out the red carpet treatment at World Travel Market to launch a series of winter promotions featuring discounts and special events.

January 1 sees the start of the city’s winter celebration season, called Paint the Town Red, offering savings and special offers at hundreds of New York hotels, restaurants, stores, attractions, night clubs and Broadway shows. It runs until February 28.

There will be a team of representatives from the city’s convention and visitors bureau, renamed NYC and Company, which will be led by president and chief executive officer Cristyne Lategano-Nicholas.

They will be discussing new tours and hotels in the city, as well as within New York State, and providing copies of the Paint the Town Red guide.

Special events

Special events during the promotion include Insider’s Hour tours at more than 50 of New York’s top cultural institutions and a Winter Restaurant Week running from January 29-February 2. This sees more than 100 of the city’s top restaurants offering three-course lunch menus for $20.01. Throughout the winter promotion, many of New York’s landmarks will be decorated in red and illuminated with special effects.

Promoting quieter months

Although pre-Christmas shopping breaks in New York are top sellers in the UK, only 13% of Britons travel to the city in the winter, and the visitors bureau is keen to promote the quieter months of January-March.

Airline competition will also be stepped up when Continental Airlines begins a daily service from Stansted to Newark in May, subject to government approval.
