Priceline.com site vies for UK business

LEADING US Internet firm priceline.com has launched a version of its Web site in the UK, ahead of a £2 million promotional blitz next year.

The company, which allows customers to name their own price for goods and services, is seen as a direct rival to lastminute.com, in which it already owns a share.

The new site – priceline.co.uk – will initially sell flights only. Thirty-nine airlines are providing excess inventory to the service including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Dutch carrier KLM. Hotels, car rental and a long-distance telephone services are being added later this year.

The UK version will be run as a separate firm with its own management, headed by former Burger King chief executive officer Denis Malamatines. The team will be developing the firm’s presence in Europe and developing the UK site.
