The story of the Keystone State

Fourscore and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent a new nation…

Few states have played such a key role in the history of the United States. Philadelphia, often referred to as the birthplace of our nation, is Home to Independence Hall – a World Heritage Site where both the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution were created.

Pennsylvania was also a key battleground in the fight against slavery – the ‘Underground Railroad’, a network of sympathetic contacts and transport links that helped escaped slaves find their way to freedom, ran right through the state.

These are only two aspects of Pennsylvania’s remarkably rich heritage. Come and explore our state and you’ll also find historic warships, abandoned mines and the first oil spring discovered on US soil. You’ll visit native american heritage sites and tour the buildings where modern America was conceived.

Whatever you choose to see, the history buff in you will leave Pennsylvania intrigued, informed and pleasantly exhausted.

Look at these sections of visitpa.com, then try answering the questions that follow.

Good luck!
