Travel industry unites behind Maddie search – 15 May 2007

As the hunt to find missing four-year-old Madeleine McCann enters a new stage with the questioning by Portuguese police of a British man the travel industry is ramping up its efforts.

The Federation of Tour Operators has issued a poster calling for information from the News of the World which will be put in hotels across Portugal and Southern Spain.

Andy Cooper, director general of the Federation of Tour Operators, said that as many as 200,000 UK and overseas holidaymakers a week stay in hotels used by FTO tour operators, which include Thomas Cook, Cosmos and Airtours.

“Our members, staff and customers have all been very moved by what happened and we are keen to help all we can,” Cooper said.

Meanwhile independent travel retailer Travelcare is putting posters of Madeleine, along with details of who to contact should they have any information, into the ticket wallets it issues to its customers.

Paul Kendrick from Travelcare, said: “By targeting holidaymakers in this way, we are helping spread the message worldwide, as well as hammering home the message for families remain vigilant, while enjoying their break away.”
