A record two million British holidaymakers are getting ready to flee the country this weekend in a bid to swap gridlocked Bank Holiday roads and patchy weather for sun and sand.
According to the figures from ABTA, 1.9 million travellers will be leaving these shores with Spain the firm favourite for short haul travellers and Florida for long haul, with Paris the city break destination of choice.
ABTA president Justin Fleming urged travellers to be well prepared to ensure they had a smooth and safe journey.
“May is one of the nicest times of year to travel with cheaper prices and bearable temperatures, but Bank Holidays are always busy, so check the travel news for your destination,” he said.
