THE Tourism Authority of Thailand will use World Travel Market as the launchpad for its Amazing Thailand 2000 campaign which will focus on the destination’s cultural heritage and lifestyle.
Flying over from Bangkok for the event will be Thailand’s new minister for tourism Pavena Hongsakula and new Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Pradech Phayakvichien.
Speaking from Bangkok on the day after his appointment last month, Pradech hinted that the TAT would be taking a change of direction in the way that the destination will be marketed in the future.
Since the Amazing Thailand campaign was first launched two years ago, visitor arrivals from the UK and Ireland have risen significantly.
There was a 31% rise in 1998 and a 16% increase in the first six months of this year, which equates to an additional 116,000 visitors.
But Pradech said: “Times are changing and we cannot continue to do business in the same old ways if we are to address the many competitive challenges to come.”
He said the TAT must embrace new technology, including the Internet, in its future marketing strategies.
TAT UK and Ireland director Sumonta Nakornthab added: “While we have been delighted with the incredible growth of tourism in Thailand over the past two years we would be happy to achieve a small increase next year.”
She said there were several encouraging factors for next year, including Star Cruises’ decision to put a new vessel, Superstar Europe, into operation out of Bangkok, and the release of The Beach, the new film based on Alex Garland’s novel, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, which was filmed in Thailand.
‘We are also delighted to see the opening of Bangkok’s new monorail system which will go a long way to addressing the historical problems in getting around the capital,” added Nakornthab.
