Fire rages on pier at Weston-super-Mare

A huge fire has destroyed the pavillion on the Grand Pier at the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare.

Plumes of black smoke billowed into the sky this morning over the Bristol Channel.

The fire is thought to have broken out in the west tower of the pavillion at 6.45am this morning and quickly spread through the building.

The pier had re-opened in April after a huge revamp and locals fear the fire will damage tourism to the area.

The main blaze is now extinguished and there have been no reports of injuries.

The cause is currently unknown and the Avon Fire and Rescue Service is investigating the scene.
