Warning issued after Islamic State attack at Marseilles rail station

British travellers in Marseilles have been urged to take care following a suspected deadly terrorist attack at the city’s main railway station.

Two young women were stabbed to death outside the Marseilles St Charles train station.

Soldiers on guard at the station shot dead the attacker, who police described as of North African appearance and aged about 30

So-called Islamic State said the attacker was one of its “soldiers”.

Soldiers were already in the station as part of Operation Sentinelle, which sees combat troops patrol streets and protect key sites amid France’s ongoing state of emergency.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in updated travel advice: “Following an incident at Marseilles St Charles train station, if you are in the immediate vicinity you should take care and follow the advice of the local security authorities.”
