Flights disrupted as Storm Eleanor sweeps across UK

Airline passengers face disruption today as Storm Eleanor sweeps across the country with winds of up to 80mph.

British Airways warned that some short-haul and domestic flights from Heathrow would be affected.

Schedules are being reduced and delays to other flights are expected.

“Storm Eleanor and associated high winds will hit several parts of the UK and northern Europe on Wednesday 3 January and this will unfortunately affect some of our short-haul and domestic flights.” BA said.

“For safety reasons, National Air Traffic Services has to allow greater space between landing aircraft in strong winds and this has resulted in a reduced number of aircraft being allowed to land each hour at Heathrow.

“This will mean a small reduction in our short-haul schedules at Heathrow and some delays to other flights. The high winds may also delay the offloading of baggage at some airports throughout the day.”

BA added: “We are sorry for the difficulties caused by the poor weather and will do all we can to minimise the effect it has on our operations including using larger aircraft on some routes to help customers whose journeys have been affected by the storm.

Flybe warned that some Amsterdam flights face delays or cancellations today due to the adverse weather.

“Flybe, like every airline, has itself minimum acceptable weather conditions in which we can safely operate,” the regional airline said.

“The safety of our passengers and crew remains our number one priority at all times.

“We apologise for any inconvenience that might result from the adverse weather forecast. Please rest assured that we will always do whatever we can to get you to your destination as soon and as safely as possible.”
