A tsunami warning has been issued to New Zealand after a 7.8-magnitude struck off the coast of South Island today.
Associated Press reports although the earthquake occurred at 9.22pm local time, 100 miles west of Invercargill, which lies on the west coast of the island, tremors were felt across the island.
The tsunami warning was then issued by the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii via email.
The warning states: “An earthquake of this size has the potential to generate a destructive tsunami that can strike coastlines in the region near the epicentre within minutes to hours.”
