TripAdvisor tight-lipped over review validity warnings

TripAdvisor has refused to disclose how many warnings about the validity of reviews on hotel property pages have been posted on the site.

An Associated Press report claims the review site is continuing to post disclaimers against a number of hotels warning customers against potentially false reviews.

It is the second time in a matter of weeks that the trustworthiness of TripAdvisor reviews has come into question.

A UK spokeswoman for TripAdvisor declined to say what percentage of hotels were affected or how long the warnings remain against a property, except to say it was a tiny number of the 400,000 properties on the service.

“By featuring these warnings, as opposed to dropping the hotels in question from TripAdvisor, we provide more information to travellers, so they can make the most educated and informed decisions before they book.

“They should also be a deterrent for any property that’s thinking about trying to game the system,” she said.

She went on to add that the amount of time warnings were displayed for was based on the “nature of the infraction” as well as the steps taken to remedy it.
