Brexit ‘altering holiday planning and confidence’

Camping website Pitchup.com claims to have attracted 35% more bookings in the week from Boxing Day over the same post-Christmas period the previous year.

But the usually popular destinations of France and Spain saw booking drop by 12% and 11% respectively as the impact of Brexit alters holiday planning.

However, domestic bookings have soared, with those to Scotland doubling, England up 49% and Wales 20%.

Company founder Dan Yates said: “Brexit is definitely impacting the confidence of British consumers.

“As well as drops in large, popular European destinations such as France and Spain, which usually attract high repeat bookings, we’re also seeing shorter holidays with an average stay of 3.38 nights per booking compared to 3.92 nights last year.

“People still want to get away, but appear to be more cautious around destinations where currency fluctuation might impact their break or they’re seeking destinations where they haven’t been before for a change of scenery.”

The average lead time for bookings made during the period from December 26 was 106 days, down from 120 days the previous year.

Yates added: “With Easter around 110 days away from the booking period, we’ve seen many short breaks snapped up at top sites for the Easter long weekend.

“Balancing that out, we’re also seeing February half term and ‘Brexit Weekend’ (March 29-31) as popular getaway dates, particularly for stays within the UK.

“Longer lead bookings are heading towards the British coast with Cornwall and Dorset popular for summer, plus family sites in Italy and the Netherlands proving popular.

“Between packing away the Christmas tree and celebrating new year, we saw more British holidaymakers plan for the year ahead than ever before. Interestingly, almost half (49%) of bookings made in the week after Christmas were made via smartphone – up from 40% in 2017-18 – reflecting changing technology trends but also suggesting bookings were made on the spot following consultation with family or friends during the festive period.”
