Coventry airport closes

Coventry airport has ceased operations because of financial problems, with the loss of 70 jobs. The airport’s owner, West Midlands International Airport, is due in the High Court today to respond to a winding-up petition.

A Civil Aviation Authority (CCA) statement said: “The CAA is aware that West Midlands International Airport Ltd has ceased operations. A notice to airmen has been issued notifying pilots the aerodrome is closed.

“The airport’s air traffic control has ceased operating, although some aircraft being flown for non-commercial purposes are being allowed to leave the airport on a case-by-case basis.”

Thomsonfly stopped using the airport in November 2008, which was the last time the airport was used for scheduled passenger flights.
