Dubai International airport reports record passenger numbers

Dubai International airport has reported a record number of passengers in January 2010.

A total of 3.86 million passengers passed through the airport last month, an increase of 17% on January 2009 and the eight consecutive month that the airport has seen year-on-year growth.

The volume of cargo also increased, with Dubai Airports cargo handling 171,453 tonnes of freight in January 2010, a 31.5% increase on the 130,375 tonnes carried in January 2009.

Dubai Airports chief executive Paul Griffiths said: “Dubai is on the leading edge of a rebound in global air traffic.

“Dubai International has been registering robust growth since the second quarter of 2009 when the industry’s key hubs were still recording negative growth.

“Globally, recent figures from IATA and the Airports Council International indicate the gradual return of passenger and cargo volumes as the world economy improves. January’s impressive increases at Dubai International are a promising sign that an industry recovery is indeed underway.”
