Barrhead Travel makes Sunday Times top employers list

Barrhead Travel was the only travel agency to make it into The Sunday Times 100 Best Companies To Work For list yesterday.

The Scottish travel agency chain, which has 16 shops and employs more than 300 people, was a new entry on the list and came in at number 28.

The firm ranked eighth out of all 100 companies for how employees feel about their colleagues, 10th for their positive views on their bosses and 15th for staff wellbeing.

Staff said they were excited about where Barrhead Travel was going and they were proud to work at the organisation.

Chief executive Sharon Munro said: “We put staff first and customers second. If we look after them, they will look after our customers. We encourage staff to come up with ideas, because they are working on the front line and they know better than us what customers want.”

Travel add-ons supplier Holiday Extras was ranked number 66 on the list. Most of the staff (72%) at the Ashford-based firm said they were excited about the company’s future and 79% said the managers expressed their appreciation for a job well done.

Bourne Leisure, which operates 50 sites across its three brands – Haven Holidays, Warner Leisure Hotels and Butlins – rose from number two to nine on the Best 25 Big Companies To Work For list.

While more than 70% of the 5,028 staff earn £15,000 or less for about 42 hours of work a week, they suffer less stress and pressure than employees at most other organisations on the list. The company spent £2 million on fun events for staff last year.

InterContinental Hotels Group and Marriott International were also named on the Best 25 Big Companies To Work For list.
