STB targets domestic market with campaign

THE Scottish Tourist Board will use British Travel Trade Fair as the springboard for its new marketing campaign, Scotland:Yours to Discover, which is being launched in Edinburgh today.

The promotion, which runs until May, replaces the STB’s Spring into Summer campaign.

Aimed predominantly at the domestic market, the campaign is part of the STB’s attempt to persuade people to take short breaks in Scotland.

“This really is our main campaign for the year,” said an STB spokeswoman.

The campaign includes special deals, such as discounted accommodation at participating hotels and two-for-the-price of one entry to attractions.

A hot topic at BTTF will be last month’s publication of the Scottish Executive’s new National Strategy for Tourism which laid out its proposals for Scotland’s tourism industry.

Included in the report was a proposal to raise the standard of hotels graded by the STB’s Quality Assurance scheme from an average of two stars to an average of three stars by 2005.

Other recommendations were that the industry develops more niche products covering activity, culture, environment and genealogy. Another growth area identified for Scotland was business tourism, such as meetings and conferences.

The report said the STB’s on-line booking facility, Ossian, will be operational by June. This will be backed up by a call centre, established by the STB’s partnership with the private sector. By next year, tourism information and booking will be available through one national and international telephone number.

Joining the STB on its stand will be Greater Glasgow and Clyde Valley, Perthshire, and the Shetland Islands, plus a range of partners from the private sector including operators, hoteliers, a number of new and established visitor attractions, and a number of retail outlets.

The Scottish Tourist Board can be contacted on tel: 0131 332 2433, fax: 0131 343 1513 or www.visitscotland.net.
