Dame Helen Mirren to be godmother of Scenic Eclipse

Dame Helen Mirren has been named godmother to Scenic Eclipse.

The Oscar-winning actress will name the new ship in New York on September 10.

She said she was “honoured” to have been chosen by the luxury cruise line.

“Scenic Eclipse is a unique ship that requires an equally unique person to act in this role,” said Glen Moroney, founder and chief executive of Scenic.

“We are delighted to welcome Dame Helen Mirren as Scenic Eclipse Godmother – her style, beauty and spirit of adventure are true to those embodied in the design and ethos ofScenic Eclipse. Combined with the international acclaim as one of the world’s finest actresses, Helen Mirren makes the perfect godmother to figuratively preside over the ship and bring good fortune.”

Dame Helen Mirren said: “I am very honoured to have been chosen as the godmother to such a beautiful vessel as Scenic Eclipse. She will have many adventures and a wonderful life as she transports her guests in immaculate style and great safety to beautiful places.”

It is the second time the film and TV star has been godmother to a cruise ship after she was named godmother to P&O Cruises’ Ventura in 2008.

Dame Helen won a best actress Oscar in 2007 for her performance as Queen Elizabeth II in The Queen and has been nominated numerous times.

The maiden voyage Eclipse is scheduled for August 15 departing Reykjavik on a 13-day sailing, ending in Quebec on August 27.

Eclipse successfully completed its first sea trials last month after being delayed three times because of financial challenges at the shipyard in Croatia where the vessel is being built.

It is described as the world’s first “discovery yacht”, and will offer cruises in the Americas, Antarctica, Europe, the Arctic and fjords.
