A petition calling for Thomas Cook to be saved has attracted thousands of signatures.
The Change.org petition had attracted more than 40,000 signatures on Sunday.
It states: “The iconic travel firm, the oldest travel firm, Thomas Cook has made dream holidays for us all and we have made so many memories, had work experiences and met so many great people that had effect in our lifes.
“One of the well known British brand
“I so believe the company will come good again once this financial problems have been resolved.
“Let’s help our Thomas Cook at this difficult times.
“If the Government or any other lenders help to fund shortfall of money then the future will be bright.
“Save Thomas Cook!”
Creditor banks, led by the Royal Bank of Scotland – itself state-owned after being bailed out by the government in 2008, issued a last-minute demand Thomas Cook find an extra £200 million in contingency funding ahead of a key vote due to be held on September 27.
The travel giant has been scrambling to find the extra cash in the last 48 hours as unions representing Thomas Cook staff urged the government to intervene.
The potential cost of bringing home all passengers is put at about £600 million.
There are believed to be 600,000 Thomas Cook customers on holiday, of which 150,000 to 160,000 are from the UK.
Thomas Cook employs 9,000 staff in the UK.

Government urged to prevent banks from pushing Thomas Cook over the edge
