Travellers to India urged not to panic following gun attack

Travellers to India have been urged not to panic after gunmen opened fire on a bus in the capital of New Dehli.

The incident comes ahead of the city hosting the Commonwealth Games next month.

Two Taiwanese tourists were injured in the attack close to the Jama Masjid mosque, a popular tourist site.

Witnesses said the attackers, who were riding a motorcycle, fired with automatic weapons.

India’s tourism minister Kumari Selja strongly condemned the attack, saying it “shows the desperation of those elements who want to create panic in the society by attacking innocent people.”

She appealed to the tourists and tourism industry not to be panic, adding India is a safe destination.

“The safety and security of tourists is of the utmost concern of the government,” she stressed.

Indian Islamist group, the Indian Mujahideen, has threatened to target the Commonwealth Games in response to the recent killing of Muslims in Indian-administered Kashmir.
