The boss of Miles Morgan Travel has received backing from his local MP in highlighting the plight of the Covid ravaged travel industry to the chancellor.
Monmouth Conservative MP David Davies has written to Rishi Sunak calling for “special consideration” to be given for supporting the travel and exhibition industries.
The letter was triggered by Miles Morgan, chairman of regional miniple Miles Morgan Travel, who has been vocal in calling for government support for the travel sector but critical of the chancellor’s new Jobs Support Scheme.
Morgan, responding to the intervention by Davies, tweeted: “@RiskiSunak the industries’ plight is obvious, the industry is very viable going forward, please don’t reply by saying JSS is the solution, it clearly is not for our sector. Please listen…thank you.”
Davies wrote to Sunak on Monday with an attached message from Morgan.
The letter said: “Mr Morgan is a leading travel agent with 100 employees.
“As you will see he is very concerned for the future of the travel and events industries in the light of Covid-19 restrictions.
“You will note he is currently trading with no income and having to employ people to administer refunds.
“Mr Morgan ran a thriving business before the Covid epidemic and has every confidence the business will be viable wen life returns to normal.
“However, he and his fellow travel agents and events organisers desperately need financial support to get them through the coming winter.”
Davies added: “My purpose in writing is to bring these concerns to your attention and respectfully ask if you will give serious consideration to putting in place some special support measures for the travel and events industries so that people like Mr Morgan who have a viable business model will be able to rebuild their businesses when the Covid epidemic has been defeated.”
