Tui Travel has officially launched its first sustainability strategy to deliver the most fuel-efficient airlines in Europe and make 10 million of its holidays ‘greener’ within three years.
The Sustainable Holidays Plan 2012-14 sets four goals and identifies 20 measurable commitments against which it will report on progress annually.
The four goals are: to deliver 10 million ‘greener and fairer’ holidays by 2015; to operate Europe’s most fuel-efficient airlines, saving more than 20,000 tons of carbon from its ground operations; to make staff regard Tui Travel as a leader in sustainability; and to make customers regard Tui as a leader in sustainable holidays.
The commitments to achieve these goals include investing in projects that drive environmental and socio-economic improvements in key destinations and replicate them elsewhere; trialling sustainable biofuel on flights and exploring a long-term sustainable biofuel strategy; featuring more than 3,000 hotels certified as sustainable; and ensuring 50% of differentiated hotels have an environmental management standard.
Other commitments include staff dedicating 100,000 hours to volunteering, launching a sustainability communications campaign across the group and reducing CO2 emissions from the company’s major premises, retail shops and brochure production by 10%.
