Trade braces for busiest day of flight bookings

Today (Monday) is expected to be the busiest day of the year for flight bookings.

Travel search site Skyscanner anticipates a huge peak in traffic around 1pm as people Brits go online during their lunch break to book their next holiday.

Spain and Italy are expected to be the top choices, while the US is also expected to make the top three, as flight searches continue to see a strong recovery following Hurricane Sandy.

Skyscanner has also identified Myanmar (Burma), China and destinations across Eastern Europe as some of the fastest-growing countries over the past 12 months for more adventurous travellers.

Spokesman Sam Poullain said: “January is typically a very busy month for holiday bookings, as British workers get back to their desks after the festive period and need that next holiday away to look forward to.

“We’re expecting the old favourites such as Spain, Italy and the US to be at the top of the list, but we’re also seeing a significant rise in destinations further afield such as Myanmar and China, while we expect to see Croatia become a firm favourite with those looking for an alternative sun spot in the Mediterranean.”
