Egypt disruption warning as revolution anniversary looms

Protests and travel disruption are expected in Egypt this week in the run-in to the third anniversary of the 2011 revolution in the country.

A number of groups have called for demonstrations to mark Saturday’s anniversary, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office cautioned in an updated travel advisory.

“You are advised to take particular care in the vicinity of government buildings, and to avoid all demonstrations and large gatherings,” the FCO said. “Before embarking on a journey seek information about any disruptions to your route and consider your travel plans carefully.”

It described protests, marches and demonstrations as being common across Egypt.

“Demonstrations often happen on Fridays, but can occur at any time and with little prior notice. The atmosphere at demonstrations can change quickly and without warning. Police may use water cannon, tear gas, birdshot or live ammunition for crowd control.”

At least 12 people died in protests in Cairo, Alexandria, Fayoum and Ismailia earlier this month.

“If you become aware of any nearby protests, leave the area immediately,” The FCO said. “Don’t attempt to cross road blocks erected by the security forces or protesters.

“Make sure you keep valid photographic identification with you at all times. Take particular care in areas with a history of regular protests.”
