More snow grounds flights in the US

Around 1,700 flights across the US were grounded yesterday as a snow storm hit many southern states.


The main airport in New Orleans was closed on Tuesday but re-opened with a reduced service.


Delta Air Lines grounded 1,850 flights on Tuesday, including more than 800 from Atlanta.


Almost 600 flights flying into or out of the US were reported to be cancelled yesterday.


The latest cold snap stretched across much of the US on Wednesday, sending temperatures as low as -34ºC.


The storm was blamed for at least 12 deaths, many of them traffic-related.


Many commuters abandoned cars along jammed motorways to seek shelter in churches and fire stations, the BBC reported.
