Second earthquake hits Kefalonia

Temporary accommodation is being provided on a ship after a second earthquake struck the Greek island of Kefalonia.

The quake hit on Monday, just over a week after a 5.8 magnitude earthquake sparked off aftershocks and tremors.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in an updated travel advisory that a ship moored off Argostoli harbour was providing accommodation to those affected.

Local authorities reported that ferries were suspended from Argostoli port to the mainland, but the ports of Poros and Fiskardo were functioning as normal.

The island’s airport remains open and operational.

“Local authorities are continuing to implement their emergency plans and advising residents to report any structural damage to properties to the regional governor’s office in Argostoli,” the FCO said.

“Civil engineers are urgently assessing the damage and where homes are ruled unsafe, temporary accommodation is being provided on a ship moored off Argostoli harbour.”
