Hijacked plane lands at Geneva airport

An Ethiopian Airlines aircraft was hijacked and forced to land in Geneva, according to reports.

The co-pilot has reportedly been arrested for taking control of the plane while the pilot was in the toilet. After leaving the aircraft through a window, the co-pilot surrendered to police and asked for asylum in Switzerland.

The aircraft was en route from Addis Ababa to Rome, but landed in Geneva instead. Ethiopian Airlines said the situation was under control and all 200 passengers were safe. It is making arrangements for customers to travel on to their intended destination.

The pilot is understood to have issued a mayday as the aircraft flew over Sudan.

Geneva airport has now reopened but there have been some cancellations and delays.
