Approximately 29 people were killed as gunmen attacked townships close to the Lamu Island tourist resort in Kenya on Saturday.
The townships of Hindi, 15 kilometres from Lamu, and Gamba, located in the Tana River region, were targeted.
The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) said: “Lamu Island, one of Kenya’s primary tourist resorts, is in no way affected by these attacks. The majority of visitors travelling to Lamu arrive by air into the local airport.
“Neither Hindi or Gamba are areas frequented by international tourists and there were no tourists in the area at the time of the incidents.”
The violence – the latest in as series of deadly attacks in the region – has been attributed to Mombasa Republican Council, a separatist movement in the coastal region.
Security agencies are tracking down the attackers, the KTB said.
A national tourism crisis management committee meeting was being convened today (Monday) by the country’s commerce and tourism principal secretary.
