British holidaymakers stranded in Mexico’s hurricane-hit Baja California region are due to be evacuated today (Thursday).
They have been told to go to Los Cabos airport at 6am local this this morning but have been warned of long delays before flying out.
The call came from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in the wake of Hurricane Odile which hit the Los Cabos resort area on Sunday.
Thousands of foreign travellers are being airlifted out of Los Cabos, although the FCO did not specify the number of British holidaymakers involved.
“British Nationals in the affected area are advised to go to Los Cabos international airport from 6am where there will be British consular staff in the airport working with the Mexican authorities to get British Nationals on evacuation flights,” The FCO said.
“Please go with the expectation of a potentially long wait.”
An estimated 30,000 holidaymakers have been left stranded and more than 239,000 people had their power knocked out by the storm.
With Los Cabos airport still closed yesterday to commercial flights, tourists were being flown out on military aircraft.
Tourism minister Claudia Ruiz Massieu said via Twitter that 5,000 travellers had been flown out since the airlift began Tuesday.
