British travellers in Hong Kong are being advised to stay away from demonstrations which turned violent yesterday.

The updated travel advisory from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) came as Hong Kong chief executive CY Leung warned pro-democracy activists not to return to the streets following the latest clashes.

His comments came after some of the worst clashes between protesters and police since pro-democracy demonstrations began two months ago.

Police armed with pepper spray, batons and water hoses cleared activists from Lung Wo Road in the Admiralty district. Government offices were briefly shut yesterday.

The FCO said protests in the Mong Kok and Admiralty areas resulted in clashes between police and demonstrators and a series of arrests.

“You should avoid all demonstrations, and monitor local media,” the FCO said.

“There has been some disruption to traffic and public transport services. The MTR (underground) is operating normally but some exits in Admiralty Station have been closed.”
