AirAsia confirms black box of flight QZ8501 has been located

Search and rescue teams hunting for the wreck of the AirAsia A320 have located the tail of the aircraft underwater.

The tail is the section where the black box voice and flight data recorders are located.

“We have found the tail that has been our main target today,” said the head of Indonesia’s search and rescue Bambang Soelistyo.

“The tail part has been found and confirmed at a position in our second priority sector.”

Airline founder Tony Fernandes said on Twitter: “I am led to believe the tail section has been found. If right part of tail section then the black box should be there.

“We need to find all parts soon so we can find all [our] guests to ease the pain of our families. That still is our priority.”

The aircraft was en route from Surabaya, Indonesia to Singapore on December 28 with 162 people on board when it disappeared from radar.

Forty bodies have been recovered so far but authorities believe most of the passengers could still be inside the main body of the aircraft.
