KLM drops Gatwick-Amsterdam route

KLMis pulling off the Gatwick-Amsterdam route at the end of next month after just one season of re-entering the market.

The axing of the service comes amid a raft of cuts across KLM’s network following increased losses this financial year (Travel Weekly January 31).

The Dutch carrier said the Gatwick route will remain within the KLM group but couldn’t say which partner would take it on. Likely airlines include Alitalia or one of KLM’s subsidiaries. It is unclear if the four-daily frequencies will remain.

Other routes to be cut include Amsterdam flights to Karachi, Jeddah, Riyadh, Baku, Santiago and Basel/Mulhouse.

KLM took over the Gatwick service last November after deciding partner Transavia was performing poorly on the route. Transavia had served Gatwick since 1986.

The shake-up at Gatwick will occur as KLMUK drops Stansted flights to Glasgow and Edinburgh as it seeks to consolidate UK services to just serving Amsterdam.
