SeaWorld Orca that killed trainer, Tilikum, dies

Tilikum, the orca that killed a trainer at SeaWorld Orland in 2010, has died.

The killer whale passed away this morning after being treated for a bacterial lung infection. The official cause of death will be determined after the necropsy is completed.

SeaWorld said it was “deeply saddened” by his death with vets and caretakers treating him over the course of his illness.

Tilikum is thought to have been about 36-years-old and joined SeaWorld 25 years ago.

He was featured in the documentary Blackfish, which criticised parks that keep killer whales in captivity, suggesting that life in tanks makes them more aggressive.

Trainer Dawn Brancheau died after Tilikum dragged her underwater and struck her, as she performed with him in front of an audience.

SeaWorld wrote in a statement: “While today is a difficult day for the SeaWorld family, it’s important to remember that Tilikum lived a long and enriching life while at SeaWorld and inspired millions of people to care about this amazing species.

“Tilikum’s life will always be inextricably connected with the loss of our dear friend and colleague, Dawn Brancheau. While we all experienced profound sadness about that loss, we continued to offer Tilikum the best care possible, each and every day, from the country’s leading experts in marine mammals.”

President and chief executive of SeaWorld Joel Manby added: “Tilikum had, and will continue to have, a special place in the hearts of the SeaWorld family, as well as the millions of people all over the world that he inspired. My heart goes out to our team who cared for him like family.”
