Airtours faces ASA rap over pricing claims

THEADVERTISING Standards Authority has upheld a complaint by Stockport trading standards officers against Airtours over an advertisement promoting a holiday discount and insurance offer.

The advertisement urged customers to take advantage of a 15% discount, subject to the purchase of insurance, before November 15 1998. It said new legislation would prevent these discounts after that date.

TheASA ruled the advertisement was misleading because it implied consumers would be disadvantaged after November 15, when the law ending the linking of holiday discounts to the sale of insurance took effect.

It pointed out the legislation had been introduced because the practice of tying discounts to the purchase of insurance was considered unfair.
