Factfile: Homeworking – What’s it like?

What’s it like?

Denise Emery, 39, became an Instant Holidays homeworker because she found herself working longer and longer hours in her previous position as a line manager at Floran Travel and didn’t want her 12 year old son to become a “latchkey” kid.

While working as a homeworker, she worked right up to the birth of her daughter, now 3 months. She has also worked at Lotus Supertravel.

We asked her for her views.

Q: What hours do you work?

A: I work five days a week, 8am to 9pm with a 3hr break.

Q: How much do you earn?

A: My average take-home pay per month is £1,700 but it can be much higher. Last year I earned £28,000, almost treble my previous salary.

Q: How many calls do you get a day on average?

A: Between 25-30. About 20% of those are converted into bookings.

Q: Do you specialise in any area?

A: I sell Europe in the summer and ski holidays in the winter.

Q: Do you find it difficult establishing client rapport?

A: No, I find it easier speaking to clients over the phone. They don’t have any barriers and are much more direct about what they want.

Q: Do you have any opportunities for career development?

A: You can progress to supervisory level and as the company grows there will be other opportunities.
